Path of Exile Item Upgrading

The ability to upgrade items allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Items with weak bases, such as rings can be upgraded to a stronger base. Items with strong bases, such as the Titans of eth have little change in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They give you an attribute bonus, or extra effect, while the equipment is in use. There are three types that are universal upgrades (which include gems), prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, can be placed in any type of equipment, and offer lower bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are gems that are only available in legendary and ascended equipment. They offer the same benefits as jewels, but cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades that can be put in gathering tools, will add their name to the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for instance adding the word Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If the player upgrades their gathering tool, and then replaces the glyphs with a different one the previous one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component with a glyph, it will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped freely.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from the previous versions in a few key ways. Gear is now broken down into tracks and items can be upgraded a specific number of times before they're "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level up however the materials required aren't as high. This lets players focus their efforts on a few important items to maximize their impact, rather than spreading out the upgrade costs across several pieces.

Rerolling
