WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader
Upgrades can give you boosts in certain stats. Each upgrade increases item level by 3. A random additional substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.
Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless it has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the need to roll to get a perfect version.
Recycle Points
The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.
You can upgrade your equipment at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader once every couple of weeks to keep your equipment up-to-date.
Upgrades can cost more based on the item level, but they will always be cheaper than buying new equipment. For example upgrading a Benthic chest piece to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from a different player will cost 105.
Valorstones
Upgrades are functional items which can be used to level up weapons and tools, armor and other items. They are purchased by players from item upgrader NPCs in exchange for different currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased it can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor with the help of button, which displays a preview of the Item Level Upgrade when it is upgraded in the event that the player has enough materials.
Upgrade costs vary depending on the item slot, and the current item level. For instance weapons are more expensive than bracers, or gloves. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Certain upgrades provide a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.
Many locations offer item upgraders, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of getting the latest recipe. The discount on upgrades increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or quests.
Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no item upgrader available at the beginning of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only available through a variety means. This is both a positive and a drawback.
In Season 3 the upgrade system was altered a bit, with some new features added. Once a player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same item level, will cost less. This is true regardless of whether the items are from a different set of gear.
The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade is reduced and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players have reached certain milestones in their achievements.
Crests
When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a couple of options. Flightstones are an item that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item level upgrade level upgrades. Crests are a crucial part of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.
First, you should know that crests are only available for equipment of a certain rank. Each rank has a different upgrade path. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade requires up to 20 crests, based on the kind of equipment that is being upgraded.
Players can earn crests by completing tasks at the appropriate level. This could be by doing outdoor activities or taking on dungeons and raids of any difficulty to earn lower-tier gear or Mythic+ raid bosses or dungeons with heroic difficulty to obtain endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken, for the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.
Using these new currencies isn't that difficult however, the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. Once a piece of gear reaches the highest level of upgrade items for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it will no longer require Flightstones. This change allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest level possible for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.
Another important change is that crests only have one usage therefore it's essential to use them wisely. For instance, it's best to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrader equipment available and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning on making. This is particularly true for items like rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to benefit from the account-wide discount if all slots are filled with top-quality gear.
