Lolita's Personality

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who enjoy playing, climbing and play. They need at least 2 to 3 hours each day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a fun pet they also make wonderful pets for children.

The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to those living nearby. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud cries which can be a nuisance for those who live in condos or apartments.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex has been determined pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases, and tricks. It is not an easy process, and it's important that the owner has patience and understands that this isn't something to be undertaken lightly. Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists were hopeful that Lolita would have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member, on a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where she could stay for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that bond with their family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging quickly and her health is declining.

Since her captor doesn't have to divulge the information, it's not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita Many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to living a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.

After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean where she can go swimming in the deep sea, perhaps even reconnect with her orca mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale who died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
