Lolita's Personality

Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can be a nuisance for those living near. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which could be a problem in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their noise.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine the sex. Once the bird's sex is known the breeding process can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. It is a lengthy process and the pet macaws's owner must be patient and realize that this is a tough task. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help correct any issues with behavior.

Lolita's Care

For decades activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, pledged to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to eventually open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the remainder of her life and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the actual ocean not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that are close to their families until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her departure from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean, where she can swim deep in the water and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale who died on Friday as a result of what was thought to be a kidney problem.
