Cylinder locks are commonly found on uPVC doors, but can also be found on other types of doors. Cylinder locks are operated by using a key that unlocks the cylinder's casing. The case is then able to reveal pins that can be aligned to those inside the lock, and permit them to turn the revolving camera, opening the door. Euro Cylinders are available with up to six pins. External and internal doors require different levels of security.

Selecting the right cylinder for your needs is essential; it is contingent on the way your doors and handle are utilized. For instance, doors that are external door handles require an extra secure cylinder, whilst internal doors can be secured with a standard cylinder. In addition, some cylinders come with additional features that increase security even more, like anti-drill and anti-bump characteristics.

A euro cylinder should be properly measured to ensure that it is the correct size for your door. The cylinder needs to be measured from the central screw hole to the ends of the cylinder. This includes the thumb turn should there be one. It is best to do this with the lock in place however when this isn't feasible, you can take it off and remove it to take measurements. A cylinder that extends beyond the handle and escutcheon might be susceptible to attacks like snapping locks, therefore it is essential that it is not too long.

Most modern cylinders are designed with anti-drill and bump resistance features built into their design. These are designed to reduce attack chances by forcing the cylinders to turn in a different direction. This will help to prevent attacks and keep your doors safe.

There are also cylinders that have been designed to withstand snapping. This is an increasingly common type of attack on cylinders where the break line in the lock is targeted by a tool that is specially designed to break off the front of the cylinder to allow the door to open. This is a lot faster and more straightforward than opening the door with a multipoint lock and leaves no evidence of a burglary, which could hinder an insurance claim.

Spring Cassette

This spring cassette sits inside the base of the door handle backplate, supplying a spring-loaded solution to return the multipoint lock handles back to their normal position after using. These handles used to have no spring and would droop when the locking mechanism was removed. This component is the best way to address this issue. It also prevents your door from getting stuck in either the closed or open position, as they are difficult to close manually.

These spring cassettes have been specifically made for use with sprung multipoint locks, they will not fit non-sprung multipoint handles for internal bifold doors. You will require a hole specifically cut in the backplate to allow them to fit (please see image for technical diagram). These cassettes can be used as a replacement to broken or missing cassettes in the backplate of uPVC door handles. They have a square cut-out that can accommodate an 8mm spindle, and they are supplied individually.
